Threads launched in 2023, Meta’s Threads made a splash, gaining over 100 million users in five days. At the time, the app was the fastest-growing to this point, ahead of even OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which took two months to gain that much traction.
Thanks to its game-changing integration with Instagram, Threads started out, but it has not stopped there. The platform has more than 320 million monthly active users, and Meta is updating the platform with new features to keep the active users coming.
Tagging Finally Comes to Threads
Origins at Instagram notwithstanding, Threads failed to master one thing many people felt must exist: the ability to tag people in posts. Today that changes as Meta officially rolls out account tagging, a new ‘Media’ tab, and the Markup tool.
These updates should be live for Android and iOS users on the latest Threads version (365.0.0.40.109).
What is New?
Account Tagging
With this feature, you can tag people in your photos—but only if their permissions allow it.
How to add someone to a post:
- Open Threads and tap the + icon.
- Tap the Gallery icon and choose an image.
- Tap the human silhouette icon.
- Find the account you want to tag and select it.
- Tag the image at the desired point within the image.
The “Media” Tab
A new Media tab lets people view all their photos and videos in a single index. It is the same as Instagram’s media section, and Adam Mosseri mentioned that it has “long been requested by the community.”
Markup Tool
One new live feature is Markup, which lets users relist other people’s content with highlights, drawings, and custom commentary. This feature integrates well with Meta’s aim to make Threads more interactive and creative.
Competing With X (Twitter) and Beyond
Threads launched shortly after its biggest rival, X (Twitter), launched a dedicated vertical video feed. With social media platforms vying for its viewership, Threads is evidently investing heavily in features to keep its users invested in the app.
Final Words
The latest evolution of Threads, with tagging, a media tab, and the Markup tool. These new features will likely boost engagement and cement Meta’s status as a considerable contender on the social media scene.
