The recent Google Pixel bug fixes and performance improvements were part of a December 2024 software update to improve network connection. Unfortunately, a small group of users have begun experiencing a bug with this update, impacting Pixel 6 to Pixel 9 series mobile data connectivity.
PiunikaWeb first identified the issue by pointing to user reports on Reddit and Google’s Community Support Page. Some complaints were intermittent mobile data or complete data drops, indicated by an exclamation point.
What’s Happening?
Users across different Pixel models have reported connectivity problems:
- Pixel 7: After the update, another user, No_Chemical_3911, said that their mobile data intermittently stopped functioning correctly on their device.
- Pixel 8: One user chimed in, reporting similar connectivity issues, which particularly degraded data performance.
- Pixel 9 Pro: Reddit and Google’s forums report that data reception drops completely, and the status bar shows an exclamation mark. The problem temporarily disappears when you restart the device but returns soon.
- Pixel 9 Pro XL: One user said mobile data is frequently lost, but calls are not.
Affected Users – Temporary Fixes
Users have found some workarounds to mitigate Google’s bug temporarily.
Reset Mobile Network Settings
- Go to Settings, System, Reset Options, and select Reset Mobile Network Settings.
- It will delete saved Wi-Fi passwords and Bluetooth connections, so you must re-enter them.
Disable 4G/VoLTE Calling
- Go to Settings → Network & Internet → SIMs → Select your provider’s name → Disable Wi-Fi Calling.
- Workaround at least one Pixel 7 user could revert to stable mobile data connectivity.
Restarting the Device
For some users, restarting the phone fixes connectivity temporarily, not permanently.
What’s Next?
These bugs are particularly irritating for everyone else, especially since Google is proud to mention network stability in the December update.
Google will fix the problem in the next patch, but there is no timeline. If the problem persists, affected users are encouraged to contact Google Support or watch for the official fixes mentioned in Pixel Community Updates.
Stay Updated
December 2024 update is better or worse depending on what features you’re using, but the bug should remind us of the scale of updating large amounts of software. We have temporary fixes to relieve those suffering from mobile data disruption, but an official solution can’t arrive soon enough.
