The trend is being led by Netflix, which has been making steady progress by rolling out various free-to-play Android games for subscribers and streaming games like Oxenfree to TVs. With co-CEO Gregory K. Peters present at Netflix’s Q4 2024 earnings call, he said the company is looking to supplement its catalog with games that would work in a couch co-op or even be party games. Netflix’s statement about turning game nights into the latest streaming experience.

Couch Co-Op and Party Games: The New “Board Game Night”

During an earnings call, Peters described Netflix’s picture of games as a development that will replace classic family board game nights. They are cloud-streaming games that let users play multiplayer games on the TV while gathering in person.

Party and cooperative games are a natural next step for Netflix based on the perceived success of the existing narrative games based on their IPs. Playing trivia, classic game show style competitions, or even fun multiplayer games with your family and friends on your Netflix subscription.

According to Peters, old-style game shows might be tweaked for the streaming age, allowing Netflix subscribers to watch as the show airs live and participate in real-time in interactive versions of Jeopardy or Wheel of Fortune.

Child-Friendly Gaming Options

Netflix has expanded its offerings for children. In line with Netflix Games’ family-friendly approach, these games will remain free of microtransactions and advertisements.

It allows them to focus on safe and kid-friendly content, enabling parents to play with their children without receiving extra costs or inappropriate content.

Licensed Titles and Strategic Growth

For example, Netflix is looking for licensed games and can include big franchises, starting with Grand Theft Auto. To fill the gap left by the closure of Netflix’s game studio last October, the company is looking to grow its gaming division and leverage well-known IPs to attract a larger audience.

Balancing Costs and Subscriber Expectations

Netflix believes its gaming investments are proportional to its overall content spending, but the expansion gives the impression that it is steeping up the price of subscriptions. The company assures investors it is still disciplined in expenditures for games, but some subscribers are left wondering if the prices are not hikes, at least partly due to Netflix’s entry into the gaming world.

The Future of Netflix Gaming

If Netflix executes its inbound gaming strategy, it could help reframe what game nights look like. The company is positioning itself as a key player in streams and gaming, promising party games, safe options for kids, and more titles based on established IP.

Games, an evolving catalog of them for Netflix subscribers, might even make ‘Netflix and chill’ a little more interactive as these plans become a reality.
