Streaming gaming on Linux might not be anything new, but Valve’s Linux based operating system, SteamOS, is slowly bulking up a corner in the gaming world as a viable alternative to Windows on PC gaming. However, with the success of the Steam Deck, it appears Valve is getting ready to spread its wings wider still, with rumors of other manufacturers jumping onto SteamOS.
Lenovo’s Handheld: The Legion Go S
Evan Blass recently leaked images of what appears to be a Lenovo gaming handheld called the Legion Go S, one that would come equipped with a prominent Steam button on its left side, making it possible that is was meant to run SteamOS. Adding fuel to the fire, The Verge confirmed receiving an invite to a CES event on January 7th titled “Lenovo Legion x AMD: ‘The Future of Gaming Handhelds.’
Certainly, Steam Deck co-designer Pierre-Loup Griffais was on the ‘special guest’ list for the event invite, which also specifically advertises Valve as being a guest. That’s a strong indication that the Lenovo Legion Go S will be a SteamOS powered handheld, which would make it the first third party device to run it.
The Event Details
The Verge reports that the Lenovo Legion and AMD gaming leaders have a cocktail reception listed at the start of the event, with Valve playing a lead role. The event promises a proposal for future gaming handhelds and Lenovo Legion Go innovations driven by AMD Ryzen technology.
Here’s an excerpt from the event description:
Come join us for an evening cocktail reception hosted by Lenovo Legion and AMD gaming leaders, features Valve and other gaming industry giants. We’ll share our thoughts about what’s to come in the gaming handheld space and see our latest Lenovo Legion Go innovations powered by AMD. Attend to learn how Lenovo Legion and AMD Ryzen coupled together will make gaming more immersive for all, and experience the future of handheld gaming firsthand!
Why Lenovo + SteamOS Matters
SteamOS, built on Linux, is Valve’s bit of software that lets PC gamers have a gaming OS with an easy ecosystem, outside the Microsoft Windows one. If included on third party devices, it could help greatly toward Linux game and general game adoption because there are more options and more games for it to develop.
A SteamOS handheld for Lenovo would put the brand in a strong position within a brand new gaming handheld market. The Legend Go S could be a great handheld gaming PC to consider, leveraging Valve’s experience and AMD’s great Ryzen processors, but with its own unique features of performance, design, and open platform gaming.
What to Expect at CES
While details remain under wraps, the January 7th CES event will likely reveal:
- Specs and Features: A look into the Legion Go S’s hardware, design, and performance potential.
- SteamOS Integration: Lenovo’s plans for its use of SteamOS and ecosystem for better handheld gaming experience.
- Future Collaborations: Valve contemplated potential partnerships with Lenovo and AMD to provide innovations to it’s gaming line.
Handheld Gaming in a New Chapter
While the announcement of Lenovo’s SteamOS handheld is certainly an interesting product, it’s much bigger than that — it could be the launching point of SteamOS adoption with third parties. If this is the case, it could make SteamOS one of the better choices as a gaming PC as well, as the gamers get more freedom and flexibility.
